For long distance walking it is important to be well equipped, comfortable and ready for all weathers. The South West Coast Path can have very changeable weather. It most often comes in from the west, the Atlantic, which means you can have warm sunshine one minute and cold, wind and rain very soon after. Always check the Weather Forecast before you setting off. Light weight is the way to go, but don’t compromise on keeping yourself warm and dry as well.

On my first trip from Minehead to Westward Ho! I had heavy winter boots, an old rucksack and all sorts of kit I never used. This put a strain on my knees which almost stopped me walking. Since then I have upgraded some of my kit to lighter better quality items, and I only bring what I consider to be the essentials.
